2,000 of California band Green Day's fans cram downtown alley for intense free concert.

About 2,000 fans packed sardine-tight into an alley near Yonge and Dundas late yesterday afternoon to catch a free show by California punkers Green Day. The freebie was a boon for fans without a ticket for the trio's performance later on at the Phoenix Concert Theatre which sold out in six minutes.

Viewed from above, the scene resembled a human cattle-call,bodies,arms and legs tangled together. the squeeze was so tight near the stage that only a handful of moshers was able to climb atop the crowd so they could float over heads. Still, people managed to jump and wave arms in unison during Green Day's 35 minute high energy set. Potential danger was avoided and no injuries reported as police and 40 security guards kept fans behind blue barricades lining the narrow passageway.
